I don't have a bicycle.
Not true, I do have one, but it's not operational. The old 10-speed I was given as a birthday present when I turned 13 - boys', I insisted on a boys' bike - is gathering dust in my basement. But I wouldn't trust that one, or won't trust myself on that bike - traversing this region.
I've been meaning to get a new bike- even a new, used bike from the Troy Bike Rescue in downtown Albany (akin to Manhattan College in the Bronx) - but it hasn't happened. There's one big thing holding me back: Fear.
Seilier's piece today got me thinking it's time to get over that fear. Things are looking up.

I've used my bike a good amount throughout Delmar over the past several years, but until recently was afraid to use it to commute into Albany. I finally sucked it up and gave it a try and it turned out my crunchy friends were right- once I just did it, it wasn't a big deal. Give it a try!
I commute between Albany and Troy by bike or bus, mostly by bike at this point. I was definitely scarred at first, especially going down the hill from my neighborhood to the Corning Trail, but as the summer progressed I became increasingly comfortable. Start small, and give yourself plenty of time to get from one spot to the next and, as always, practice makes perfect. The trip which once took a little over an hour is now down to forty-five minutes. See you out there !
